Torch-On Felt Flat Roofing

Torch-on felt is a proven way to cover a flat roof. Instead of a single thin sheet nailed down, it is built up in layers, each one heat-bonded to the one below, so the finished roof is thick, tough and fully stuck to the deck with no loose edges for the wind to catch.

A base layer goes down first, followed by a cap sheet with a mineral finish that protects the roof from sunlight and wear. Upstands are dressed up the walls, and edge trims and drip details make sure water runs off cleanly rather than creeping back under the felt.

Felt is quick to lay and well suited to garages, extensions, dormers and porches. Before any work starts, the old covering comes off and the deck is checked. You get a FREE, no-obligation quotation and straight advice on whether felt is the right system for your roof.

When to Call

Signs Your Felt Roof Is Failing

  • Blisters in the Felt

Raised bubbles across the surface mean moisture is trapped under the felt and the layers are coming apart.

  • Splits & Open Seams

Cracks along the laps and seams of an older felt roof let water track underneath and into the deck below.

  • Bare, Worn Cap Sheet

Patches where the mineral surface has worn away leave the felt exposed to sunlight and breaking down fast.

  • Leaks at the Wall

A leak where the flat roof meets the house often comes from a failed upstand or flashing along the wall line.

Pricing

What Affects the Cost of a Felt Roof

Every roof is different, so the price is worked out once the roof has been looked at rather than guessed over the phone. These are the things that move it.

Felt Roofs work on a roof

FREE, No-Obligation Quotations

Every roof is looked at before it is priced, so the figure you get is the figure for your job. Your quotation costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

  • Size of the Flat Roof

The roof area sets how much felt is needed and how long it takes to strip, prepare and lay the layers.

  • Condition of the Deck

Boards that are soft or rotten from old leaks are replaced before the new felt goes down on top of them.

  • Upstands & Abutments

Walls, roof lights and pipes that meet the roof all need upstands dressing and sealing, which adds time.

  • Access to the Roof

A garage roof is quick to reach, while a first-floor extension or dormer may need a tower or scaffold.

FAQs

Felt Flat Roof Questions Answered

What Is a Torch-on Felt Roof?

It is a flat roof built up from layers of reinforced felt, each heated with a torch so it bonds to the layer below. The result is a thick, fully stuck covering finished with a mineral cap sheet that protects it from sunlight and wear.

Can New Felt Go Over My Old Felt Roof?

It is not something we recommend. Laying over old felt hides any damp or soft boards underneath and traps problems in. Stripping the old covering lets the deck be checked and repaired, so the new felt is bonded to a sound base.

Why Is My Felt Roof Blistering?

Blisters form when moisture or air trapped under the felt expands in the heat. A few small blisters can sometimes be repaired, but widespread blistering means the layers are separating and the roof is close to the end of its life.

Is Felt a Good Choice for a Garage Roof?

Yes. Torch-on felt is quick to lay and hard wearing, which makes it a practical choice for garages and outbuildings as well as extensions. We will explain how it compares with fibreglass for your roof before you decide.

Can You Repair a Small Leak in a Felt Roof?

Often, yes. A split seam, lifted edge or failed upstand can usually be cut out and patched with new felt. If the leak is one of many and the felt is worn across the whole roof, we will tell you a replacement is the better spend.
