Chimney Repointing & Leadwork in Windsor
Walk the streets below the castle and you see rows of Georgian and Victorian townhouses with chimney stacks lined up along their party walls, many still carrying four or six pots. Those stacks have stood for well over a century, and their exposed tops, high above the street, have taken every storm the Thames Valley has thrown at them. Further out, the inter-war and post-war roads of Clewer and Dedworth have smaller stacks that are now old enough to need their first proper repair. We travel about 11 miles from Wokingham to repair chimneys across SL4.
Each chimney is inspected from top to bottom before we price anything, because staining on a top-floor wall could come from the pointing, the flaunching or the lead. We then repoint the open joints, renew cracked flaunching and dress new lead into the brickwork, so the stack is sound and dry again.
Where the leak is in the roof covering rather than the stack, our Windsor roof repairs page covers that work, and if a roof needs replacing, see our Windsor new roofs page. Our Roofers in Windsor page shows everything else we do in the town.

Chimney Repointing & Flaunching in Windsor
A tall Windsor stack can lose its pointing from the top courses down, out of sight from the pavement. Once the mortar has gone, rain is drawn into the brickwork and can show up as damp on a top-floor wall or a chimney breast. Repointing rakes out the failed joints and refills them, so the stack sheds the weather again.
Stacks with a long row of pots depend on the flaunching to hold every pot firm. When that collar of mortar cracks, water enters from the very top of the chimney, so it is renewed where needed and each pot is bedded back down.
- Loose Mortar Raked Out
- Joints Repointed
- Flaunching Renewed
- Pots Bedded Firm

Signs Your Chimney Needs Repair
Damp Near the Chimney
Damp patches on a chimney breast or on a top-floor ceiling after rain point to a problem with the stack above.
Crumbling Mortar
Eroded joints high on a tall stack let in water long before they can be seen from the street.
Lifted Lead Flashing
Old lead on period roofs splits along its folds and lifts away from the brickwork.
Cracked Flaunching
A pot that has started to tilt is a sure sign the flaunching around it has cracked.

Chimney Leadwork & Lead Flashing in Windsor
On a Windsor terrace, a chimney often sits on the party wall with lead on both sides of the roof, and that leadwork has usually been patched by more than one roofer over the years. We check each piece, because the leak may come from a single cracked soaker or a back gutter full of debris rather than the whole set. Where one piece is at fault it is repaired or renewed on its own; where the lead has worn thin all round, a new set is cut, dressed and fixed into the brickwork.
These are the parts of the leadwork around a chimney stack.
- Apron Flashing
- The lead dressed over the slates or tiles along the front of the stack.
- Stepped Flashing
- The lead climbing each side of the stack in steps, set into the brick joints.
- Soakers
- Small pieces of lead slipped between the slates beside the stack.
- Back Gutter
- The lead behind the stack that stops rain from the slope above pooling against it.
- Cover Flashing
- The lead fixed into the brickwork that overlaps the soakers below.

What Affects Chimney Repair Costs
A stack on a post-war semi in Dedworth and a six-pot stack on a townhouse near the castle are very different jobs, so we price every repair after seeing it. These are the main factors.

FREE, No-Obligation Quotations
Every roof is looked at before it is priced, so the figure you get is the figure for your job. Your quotation costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
Size & Height of the Stack
Taller stacks with more pots have more brickwork and flaunching to work on.
Extent of the Repairs
Repairing one flashing costs less than repointing and re-flaunching the whole stack.
Amount of Lead Needed
A party-wall stack with lead on both slopes needs more lead than a single side.
Scaffold or Roof Ladder
Tall fronts over narrow pavements usually need a scaffold to reach the stack safely.
